A 1961 local newspaper article with a drawing by famous cartoonist Milton Caniff celebrating Civil Air Patrol's 20th anniversary
The Civil Air Patrol is the official Auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Civil Air Patrol has three primary missions: aerospace education, emergency services, and cadet programs.
The organizational structure of the Civil Air Patrol starts on a national scale to regional, wing, group, and squadron. Rockland Cadet Squadron, one of the hundreds of squadrons throughout the nation, is in the North East Region, New York Wing, and Catskill Mountain Group.
Civil Air Patrol began in the late 1930s as a organization of thousands of pilot volunteers who had a desire of service for the defense of their nation but were unable to serve in the military. The organization was officially founded as the Civil Air Patrol on 1 December, 1941, just a week prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During World War II, Civil Air Patrol conducted important homeland security missions with +500,000 flying hours over 24 million miles. Their missions included anti-submarine patrols, border patrols, courier service, and target towing. By the end of the war effort, which was particularly focused against German U-Boats (submarines), CAP located 173, attacked 57, hit 10, and sank 2. In May of 1948, the Civil Air Patrol was made the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Seventy-five years later afters its foundation, the Civil Air Patrol's mission has evolved into non-combat aviation and emergency services.
